The first on-land GST membrane full containment liquid natural gas (LNG) storage tank in the world was officially delivered after 100 days of trial operation, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co, one of the storage tank's builders, told the Global Times on Sunday. The tank is located in Hejian, in the Hebei Province of North China.

Compared to an LNG storage tank made with conventional technology, the tank uses 90% less steel and emits 27% less carbon. The GST technology was created by the French company GTT and is a new generation of LNG membrane-type land storage tank.

With the project's entry into trial operation in October 2022, 800,000 local residents' demands for natural gas throughout the 2022 winter have been met. The facility can handle more than one million square cubic metres per day, which equates to a yearly reduction in carbon emissions of 58,100 tonnes as compared to coal.

The LNG stored in the tank is significantly less likely to evaporate thanks to the nitrogen system, online gas detection system, and thermal corner protection system that are all parts of the project's GST membrane full containment system. This helps to ensure the facility's integrity management and safe operation.
